Low or No Cost Measures to
cut your bills and reduce your Carbon Emissions
|
| |
If your cylinder
doesn't have a thermostat fitted then you should have one fitted. If
it does have one then it should not be set to higher than 60 degrees
centigrade. |
|
|
|
|
Turn down your
room thermostat, reducing the temperature by just 1 degree
centigrade could reduce your fuel bill by 10 percent. |
|
|
Put aluminium
foil behind radiators fitted to outside walls. Normal kitchen foil
fixed to cardboard works fine |
|
|
Don't put
furniture to close to radiators, if they're covered by a big foam
filled sofa it's the same as insulating them, so you won't feel the
heat. |
|
|
Don't boil more
water in the kettle than you need, as long as the electric element
is covered boil as little as necessary . |
|
|
Fix all dripping
taps, this wastes more water than you think and if it's hot water
you've just paid to heat it and pour it away. |
| |
Draughts can get
in through gaps in floorboards and skirting boards, which also allow
heat to escape in winter. Stop this by filling these gaps with
newspaper, covering with a wooden bead or applying sealant. |
| |
| |
If you are only
washing or drying a few clothes make sure the machine is set to the
half load or economy setting. |
| |
If it's a dry
sunny day, don't use the drier for clothes let them blow dry
outside, for free. |
| |
Turn off the
lights when you leave a room. |
| |
Close your
curtains early to help prevent heat escaping though the windows. |
| |
|
Use energy saving
light bulbs. Just one bulb can save you £100 over it's lifetime -
and they can last up to 12 times longer than ordinary light bubs. |
| |
|
| |
|
Don't leave
appliances on standby and don't leave appliances on charge for
longer than necessary. |
